Living with Zygomycosis

A fungal infection that can affect the face and sinuses, lungs, gut or skin.

Understanding Zygomycosis

Zygomycosis is any infection caused by a fungus from the Zygomycota group.

It most often involves the nose, face and head area, the lungs, the digestive tract or the skin, and less often other organs. GARD says the fungi tend to invade arteries, which can block blood flow and damage the nearby tissue. It can occur at any age.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Pain
  • Unusual skin infection

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
