Living with XK aprosencephaly
A rare condition in which parts of the brain do not form before birth, along with differences in the face, limbs and other organs.
Understanding XK aprosencephaly
Along with the brain differences, GARD lists eye and facial differences, such as very small or close-set eyes, nasal differences and cleft lip. People can also have differences in the hands and feet, genitals, anus and spine. It is thought to be autosomal recessive.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Very small eyes (microphthalmia)
- Small head size (microcephaly)
- Differences in the nostrils
- Narrow mouth
- Closed anus (anal atresia)
- Differences in the radius (forearm bone) and genitals
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
