Living with X-linked intellectual disability-retinitis pigmentosa syndrome

A rare X-linked condition with moderate learning difficulty and severe, early-onset retinitis pigmentosa, described in one family.

Understanding X-linked intellectual disability-retinitis pigmentosa syndrome

X-linked intellectual disability-retinitis pigmentosa syndrome is characterized by moderate intellectual disability and severe, early-onset retinitis pigmentosa.

Retinitis pigmentosa is an eye disease that affects the retina. GARD says it has been described in five males across three generations of one family. Some also had a small head. Signs begin during pregnancy, at birth, or in infancy.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Intellectual disability
  • Light eye color
  • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • Small head size (in some)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
