Living with X-linked intellectual disability-acromegaly-hyperactivity syndrome

A rare X-linked condition with severe learning disability, growth hormone excess, hyperactivity, and distinct facial features.

Understanding X-linked intellectual disability-acromegaly-hyperactivity syndrome

X-linked intellectual disability-acromegaly-hyperactivity syndrome is characterized by severe intellectual disability, acromegaly, and hyperactivity.

Acromegaly means features that come from too much growth hormone. Other features include slurred speech, aggressive behavior, a triangular face with a long nose, and large testes. One case had moderate intellectual disability and milder facial differences. Brain differences have been reported. It usually shows in childhood.

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Profound intellectual disability
  • Too much growth hormone
  • Hyperactivity
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Slurred speech (dysarthria)
  • Large testes (macroorchidism)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis
