Living with X-linked distal spinal muscular atrophy type 3
A rare inherited nerve and muscle condition causing slowly worsening weakness in the hands and feet.
Understanding X-linked distal spinal muscular atrophy type 3
The muscles in the hands and feet slowly shrink and weaken. Sensation is mostly spared. Some people have mild weakness in the upper legs and hand deformities, mainly in males. It can begin at a variety of ages.
Signs & symptoms
GARD lists these symptoms as less common:
- Muscle wasting in the hands and feet
- Weakness in the hands and feet
- Reduced reflexes
- Decreased feeling in the hands and feet
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in ATP7A are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
- 4Connect with expert centers
The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
