Living with Vasculitis

Inflammation of the blood vessels that happens when the immune system attacks them by mistake.

Understanding Vasculitis

Vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels that happens when the body's immune system attacks them by mistake.

It can affect arteries, veins, and capillaries. Inflamed vessels can narrow, close off, or stretch and bulge (an aneurysm). It can be triggered by an infection, a medicine, or another disease, but the cause is often unknown. GARD says the main goal of treatment is to stop the inflammation.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary, but GARD says they usually include:

  • Fever
  • Swelling
  • A general sense of feeling ill

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Autoimmune Association and Vasculitis Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
