Living with Usher syndrome type 3

A genetic condition with hearing loss and vision loss that gets worse over time, often noticed in childhood or the teen years.

Understanding Usher syndrome type 3

Usher syndrome type 3 is a genetic condition with hearing loss or deafness and vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa that gets worse over time.

Signs often show in childhood or the teen years. Night vision goes first, then blind spots in side vision can grow and merge into tunnel vision. Cataracts can add to vision problems.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Hearing loss from the inner ear
  • Night blindness
  • Blind spots in vision (scotoma)
  • Vision loss
  • Lighter eye color
  • Reduced balance reflexes

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include ear, nose, and throat specialists, eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Foundation Fighting Blindness and Usher Syndrome Coalition may keep lists of experts for this condition.
