Living with Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome

An autoimmune condition with kidney inflammation and eye inflammation (uveitis).

Understanding Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome is an autoimmune condition that causes both kidney inflammation and eye inflammation.

In an autoimmune condition the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. This one affects the tubules and surrounding tissue of the kidneys and the middle layer of the eye (uvea). It can appear at a variety of ages.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Inflammation in the eye (uveitis)
  • Eye pain and red eye
  • Kidney inflammation (tubulointerstitial nephritis)
  • Lower kidney filtering rate
  • Fatigue and fever
  • Weight loss

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include eye disease specialists and kidney specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
