Living with Transient hypogammaglobulinemia of infancy

A temporary delay in a young child's antibody production that can cause repeated infections in the first few years.

Understanding Transient hypogammaglobulinemia of infancy

Transient hypogammaglobulinemia of infancy is a rare immune condition in which low antibody levels last beyond the first six months of life.

The immune system is slow to mature its antibody (immunoglobulin) production. Children may have repeated breathing infections, ear infections, bronchitis, stomach illness, or allergy symptoms in the first two to four years, and then it resolves on its own. Some children have no symptoms. GARD says severe infections are rare, and the ability to make antibodies after vaccines is usually normal.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these as possible features:

  • Repeated respiratory infections
  • Ear infections (otitis media)
  • Bronchitis
  • Stomach illness (gastroenteritis)
  • Allergy symptoms
  • No symptoms in some children

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include allergy and immune system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Immune Deficiency Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.

Quick facts

GARD says changes in genes (variants) cause this condition, but it doesn't name a specific gene. It describes a delay in how antibody production matures.
