Living with Tracheobroncheopathia osteoplastica

A rare condition in which bone and cartilage growths form in the large airways and may cause breathing symptoms.

Understanding Tracheobroncheopathia osteoplastica

Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TO) is a rare condition of the large airways with growths of bone and cartilage in the airway walls.

The growths (nodules) stick out into the windpipe and its main branches and can block the airway. People may have ongoing or repeated breathing symptoms and repeated infections. It can appear at a variety of ages.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Wet cough
  • Shortness of breath with activity
  • Repeated respiratory infections
  • Bronchitis or pneumonia
  • Narrowed windpipe (tracheal stenosis)
  • Fever

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include lung and breathing specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
