Living with Temtamy preaxial brachydactyly syndrome

A rare genetic condition with short fingers and toes, extra finger bones, dental differences, and hearing loss.

Understanding Temtamy preaxial brachydactyly syndrome

Temtamy preaxial brachydactyly syndrome is a rare genetic condition with short fingers and toes and other differences.

People have short fingers and toes, with extra bones in some thumbs and fingers. Other features include distinct facial features, dental differences, severe inner ear hearing loss, delayed motor and mental development, and slow growth. Signs may begin in the newborn or infant years.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Short fingers and toes
  • Extra bones in the thumb or fingers
  • Fewer teeth and other dental differences
  • Severe hearing loss
  • Delayed development and intellectual disability
  • Slow growth

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include bone and joint specialists, brain and nervous system specialists, ear, nose, and throat specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in CHSY1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
