Living with Sporadic infantile bilateral striatal necrosis

A rare brain condition in infants that affects movement, with loss of skills, stiffness, and twisting movements.

Understanding Sporadic infantile bilateral striatal necrosis

Sporadic infantile bilateral striatal necrosis is a rare brain condition that affects movement control.

It involves damage to both sides of deep brain areas that help control movement. Children can lose skills they had gained. They may develop twisting or writhing movements and muscle stiffness (dystonia) that can progress to stiffness in all four limbs. GARD lists onset as any time in life.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Loss of developmental skills
  • Abnormal movements and postures
  • Trouble speaking clearly
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Seizures
  • Low muscle tone in the trunk

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
