Living with Split hand-foot malformation 3

A rare genetic condition present at birth with severely shortened limbs, a small jaw and a small mouth.

Understanding Split hand-foot malformation 3

Split hand-foot malformation 3, also called distal limb deficiencies-micrognathia syndrome, is a rare genetic condition with severely shortened hands and feet.

It combines severe reduction of the hands and feet on all four limbs (oligodactyly) with a small, set-back jaw and a small mouth, with or without a cleft palate. Other features can include nearsightedness, hearing loss, small kidneys and moderate intellectual disability. It is present from birth.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Fewer fingers and toes (oligodactyly)
  • Missing or small thumbs
  • Small, set-back jaw
  • Small mouth
  • Hearing loss
  • Small kidneys

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
