Living with Spastic paraplegia-epilepsy-intellectual disability syndrome

A rare condition that affects the brain and nervous system because of problems moving glucose into the brain, causing seizures and developmental delay.

Understanding Spastic paraplegia-epilepsy-intellectual disability syndrome

Spastic paraplegia-epilepsy-intellectual disability syndrome is a rare neurological disease linked to problems in how the body moves glucose (sugar) into the brain.

In babies, frequent seizures usually start in the first months of life, and some newborns have fast, irregular eye movements. Head growth can slow, leading to a small head. Many people have developmental delay or intellectual disability, stiff muscles, poor balance and coordination, and speech trouble. Some have episodes of confusion, headaches or brief muscle jerks, especially when they haven't eaten recently. A smaller group has no seizures but still has learning or movement problems.

GARD doesn't list a separate symptom list for this condition. Based on its summary, symptoms include:

  • Small head (microcephaly)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
