Living with Spastic ataxia 7

A rare inherited condition with unsteady walking, stiff muscles, slurred speech and unusually small pupils.

Understanding Spastic ataxia 7

Spastic ataxia 7, also called spastic ataxia with congenital miosis, is a rare hereditary ataxia.

It seems to be non-progressive or to worsen only slowly. People have an unsteady walk, stiff muscles, strong reflexes and slurred speech. The pupils are fixed in a small size (miosis) from birth and dilate poorly. Involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) can also occur. Onset varies from person to person.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Unsteady walk (ataxia)
  • Small, fixed pupils from birth
  • Slurred speech (dysarthria)
  • Strong reflexes
  • Involuntary eye movements (nystagmus)
  • Weakness on one side of the body

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

National Ataxia Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
