Living with Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy

A noncancerous condition (Rosai-Dorfman disease) in which white blood cells build up in lymph nodes, often in the neck.

Understanding Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, also called Rosai-Dorfman disease, is a benign (noncancerous) disease in which too many histiocytes build up in the lymph nodes.

Histiocytes are a type of white blood cell. They most often collect in the lymph nodes of the neck, but other lymph nodes and other body areas can be involved. GARD says the cause is unknown, though altered immune responses and infections may play a role. It usually starts in the teen years or adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Firm lumps under the skin (less common)
  • Headache (less common)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Histiocytosis Association may keep lists of experts for this condition.
