Living with Scedosporiosis

A rare fungal infection from a common mold that can affect the lungs, skin, soft tissue, or spread through the body.

Understanding Scedosporiosis

Scedosporiosis is a rare fungal infection caused by Scedosporium molds.

It can show up in different ways, including pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infection, mycetoma (a lump-forming infection), or an infection that spreads. It can affect the brain and spinal cord. It can occur with organ transplants, chemotherapy, or chronic lung disease, but also in healthy people and after near drowning.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Fever
  • Pneumonia
  • Firm lumps under the skin
  • Unusual skin infection
  • Weakened immune function
  • Severe infections

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
