Living with Rheumatoid factor-negative juvenile idiopathic arthritis

A rare type of childhood arthritis that affects five or more joints and tests negative for rheumatoid factor.

Understanding Rheumatoid factor-negative juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Rheumatoid factor-negative juvenile idiopathic arthritis is a rare type of arthritis in children that affects five or more joints from the start.

It is called rheumatoid factor-negative because a specific antibody (rheumatoid factor IgM) is absent. GARD says the cause of this arthritis is unknown. It begins in childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Joint pain (arthralgia)
  • Joint swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Arthritis
  • Swelling in the ankles
  • Pain where tendons attach to bone (enthesitis)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists, eye disease specialists and lung and breathing specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
