Living with Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations

A rare genetic condition of small blood vessels that can affect vision, the brain, kidneys, and liver, starting in adulthood.

Understanding Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations

Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy and systemic manifestations (RVCL-S) affects small blood vessels in the brain and other organs.

Symptoms begin in adulthood. They can include vision loss, Raynaud's disease (fingers that turn pale in the cold), kidney and liver disease, and thinking problems that get worse over time. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, an exam, and brain imaging, and may be confirmed by genetic testing.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Vision problems from retina blood vessel changes
  • Thinking and memory problems (cognitive impairment)
  • Migraine
  • Raynaud phenomenon
  • Kidney disease (nephropathy)
  • Liver changes (nodular regenerative hyperplasia)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include autoimmune and inflammatory disease specialists, brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in TREX1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

United Leukodystrophy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.

GenesTREX1

It is caused by changes in the TREX1 gene. It is autosomal dominant, so one changed copy of the gene can be enough to cause it.
