Living with Qazi Markouizos syndrome

A very rare genetic syndrome present from infancy with very low muscle tone, severe developmental delay, and constipation.

Understanding Qazi Markouizos syndrome

Qazi Markouizos syndrome is a rare genetic syndrome with intellectual disability and very low muscle tone present from infancy.

The low muscle tone does not worsen over time. Other features include severe delays in development, long-lasting constipation, a swollen belly, and slow bone maturation. Seizures may occur. GARD says it hasn't been described in the literature since 1994.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Very low muscle tone as a baby (floppy infant)
  • Severe delays in development
  • Chronic constipation
  • Seizures
  • Undescended testicles
  • Repeated infections

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
