Living with Pyogenic bacterial infections due to MyD88 deficiency

A rare inherited immune condition that causes frequent, severe pus-forming bacterial infections in early childhood.

Understanding Pyogenic bacterial infections due to MyD88 deficiency

Pyogenic bacterial infections due to MyD88 deficiency is an inherited immune system disorder that causes frequent, severe infections with pus-forming (pyogenic) bacteria.

It affects the innate immune response, the body's early, general response to germs. Resistance to other bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites is normal. Most people have a first infection before age 2, and infections become less frequent by about age 10. Many people don't develop a high fever at first, even when an infection is severe.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Abscesses (pockets of pus)
  • Repeated meningitis
  • Late falling-off of the umbilical cord
  • Blood infections (septicemia)
  • Infected joints (septic arthritis)
  • Ear, nose, and throat infections

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Immune Deficiency Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.

Quick facts

InheritanceAutosomal Recessive

GARD says it is inherited in an autosomal recessive way, meaning a child inherits a changed copy of the gene from each parent. It doesn't name a gene here, but the condition involves the MyD88 protein.
