Living with Pulmonary valve agenesis

A rare heart difference present from birth in which the valve to the lungs is missing or partly missing.

Understanding Pulmonary valve agenesis

Pulmonary valve agenesis is a rare heart malformation in which the pulmonary valve flaps are fully or partly absent.

It comes with narrowing at the opening to the pulmonary artery and widened, balloon-like lung arteries. It usually occurs with other heart differences, like Tetralogy of Fallot or a hole between the lower chambers, or as part of a syndrome such as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. GARD lists onset in the newborn or infant period.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on other heart differences. GARD describes these features:

  • Leaky pulmonary valve (pulmonary insufficiency)
  • Narrowed lung artery opening (pulmonary stenosis)
  • Blocked airways from pressure of wide arteries
  • Blue-tinged skin (cyanosis)
  • Heart failure

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include heart and blood vessel specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
