Living with Proximal 16p11.2 microdeletion syndrome

A chromosome condition that often brings developmental delay, speech and language delay, and features of autism.

Understanding Proximal 16p11.2 microdeletion syndrome

Proximal 16p11.2 microdeletion syndrome is caused by a missing small piece of chromosome 16.

People usually have developmental delay and intellectual disability, and most have some features of autism spectrum disorder. Speaking is usually harder than understanding speech. Some have seizures, and the risk of obesity is higher. Symptoms vary, even within a family, and some people with the deletion have no noticeable differences. GARD lists onset in childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Delays in development
  • Intellectual disability
  • Autism features
  • Delayed speech and language
  • Attention problems (ADHD)
  • Larger head size (macrocephaly)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
