Living with Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia
A digestive disorder in which lymph vessels in the lining of the small intestine are enlarged, causing swelling, diarrhea and protein loss.
Understanding Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia
Lymph fluid leaks into the gut, which causes protein loss, low albumin in the blood, low antibody levels and weakened immunity. People may have leg swelling and belly discomfort. It can start at any time in life.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Swelling (edema), especially in the legs
- Long-lasting diarrhea
- Weight loss and slow growth
- Low red blood cells (anemia)
- Low lymphocyte count and weakened immunity
- Belly discomfort
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
