Living with Primary condylar hyperplasia
A rare jaw joint condition in which one side of the lower jaw slowly overgrows, causing facial asymmetry and a bite that doesn't meet.
Understanding Primary condylar hyperplasia
It is not a tumor. The overgrowth is progressive and uneven. It leads to uneven facial shape, a lower jaw that shifts to one side, jaw joint problems and a bite that doesn't line up (malocclusion). It can happen at any time in life.
Signs & symptoms
GARD lists these among the most common signs:
- Uneven face (facial asymmetry)
- Lower jaw shifted to one side
- Jaw joint problems
- Front teeth that don't meet (open bite)
- Changes in the shape of the chin
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
