Living with Primary biliary cholangitis
A long-term autoimmune liver disease in which bile ducts become inflamed and damaged, more common in women.
Understanding Primary biliary cholangitis
Bile builds up and can lead to liver scarring and cirrhosis. It is more common in women. Many people have no symptoms at first and may not for several years. It is often found through abnormal blood tests. Blood tests for anti-mitochondrial antibodies can help confirm the diagnosis.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common early symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Itchy skin
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
- Swelling in the legs and feet
- Fatty deposits around the eyes (xanthelasma)
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include digestive system specialists.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
- 4Connect with expert centers
Autoimmune Association and Global Autoimmune Institute may keep lists of experts for this condition.
