Living with Porencephaly-cerebellar hypoplasia-internal malformations syndrome

A very rare brain malformation syndrome with cysts in the brain, an underdeveloped cerebellum and sometimes heart or other organ differences.

Understanding Porencephaly-cerebellar hypoplasia-internal malformations syndrome

Porencephaly-cerebellar hypoplasia-internal malformations syndrome is a rare brain malformation syndrome that begins before or at birth.

It involves cysts or cavities on both sides of the brain (bilateral porencephaly), a missing septum pellucidum and an underdeveloped cerebellum with no vermis. Facial differences, a large head, clouding of the cornea, and seizures have also been seen. Heart differences such as tetralogy of Fallot and atrial septal defects, and organs placed in a mirror image (situs inversus), have been observed.

Signs & symptoms

GARD doesn't list a separate symptom list for this condition. Its description mentions these:

  • Cysts or cavities on both sides of the brain
  • Underdeveloped cerebellum
  • Large head (macrocephaly)
  • Wide-set eyes and high-arched palate
  • Clouding of the cornea
  • Seizures

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
