Living with Pneumonia caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa infection

A rare lung infection caused by Pseudomonas bacteria, seen in intensive care, in people with low white blood cells and in cystic fibrosis.

Understanding Pneumonia caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa infection

Pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is a rare lung disease caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

It happens in two ways. Primary pneumonia usually happens in the intensive care unit and is not caused by bacteria in the blood. Bacteremic pneumonia is caused by bacteria in the blood and is usually seen in people with low white blood cell counts. People with cystic fibrosis may have chronic lung infections with episodes of pneumonia. It can cause bleeding and damage in the lungs.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these:

  • Fever and chills
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bluish skin color
  • Coughing up mucus
  • Feeling very sick

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include lung and breathing specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
