Living with Pigmented purpuric lichenoid dermatitis of Gougerot and Blum

A rare skin condition that causes long-lasting reddish-brown spots, most often on the lower legs, sometimes with itching.

Understanding Pigmented purpuric lichenoid dermatitis of Gougerot and Blum

Pigmented purpuric lichenoid dermatitis of Gougerot and Blum is a rare skin disease that affects the small blood vessels in the skin.

Tiny blood vessels (capillaries) become leaky and let red blood cells escape into the skin, which leaves reddish-brown spots. The spots can appear anywhere but are most often on the lower legs. They may slowly spread to cover more skin, or they may fade on their own without permanent damage.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these:

  • Long-lasting reddish-brown spots
  • Spots most often on the lower legs
  • Intense itching in some people
  • Spots that spread slowly or fade on their own

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
