Living with Phytanic acid storage disease

An inherited condition (Refsum disease) with vision loss, loss of smell, and nerve and muscle problems.

Understanding Phytanic acid storage disease

Phytanic acid storage disease (Refsum disease) is an inherited condition that causes vision loss, loss of smell, and many other signs.

The vision loss comes from an eye disorder called retinitis pigmentosa. Other features can include bone differences in the hands and feet, muscle weakness and wasting, poor balance and coordination (ataxia), hearing loss, heart rhythm and heart problems, and dry, scaly skin (ichthyosis). It can start anywhere from childhood to adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa
  • Loss of smell
  • Poor balance and coordination (ataxia)
  • Hearing loss
  • Dry, scaly skin (ichthyosis)
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, eye disease specialists, genetic specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Foundation Fighting Blindness, Global DARE Foundation and National Ataxia Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
