Living with Parana hard-skin syndrome

A rare inherited condition with stiff, thick skin over the whole body that limits movement and chest expansion.

Understanding Parana hard-skin syndrome

Parana hard-skin syndrome is a rare inherited condition that causes stiff, thick skin over the whole body.

The hard skin limits movement, and movement of the chest and belly is severely restricted. This can cause breathing problems (respiratory insufficiency). Signs begin in infancy.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Thick, hard skin
  • Darker skin color over the body
  • Restricted chest movement
  • Breathing trouble (respiratory insufficiency)
  • Slow growth
  • Tapered fingers

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
