Living with Panuveitis

A rare eye condition with swelling and irritation throughout the middle layer of the eye.

Understanding Panuveitis

Panuveitis is a rare eye condition with inflammation throughout the uvea, the middle layer of the eye.

The uvea includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. The swelling can also reach the lens, retina, optic nerve, and the gel inside the eye (vitreous). It can reduce vision and may lead to blindness. It can occur at any time in life.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD says they may include:

  • Red eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Decreased vision
  • Floaters

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include eye disease specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
