Living with Pancreatic hypoplasia-diabetes-congenital heart disease syndrome

A rare genetic condition with a small pancreas, diabetes, and heart differences present from birth.

Understanding Pancreatic hypoplasia-diabetes-congenital heart disease syndrome

Pancreatic hypoplasia-diabetes-congenital heart disease syndrome is a rare genetic form of diabetes with an underdeveloped pancreas and heart differences.

Part of the pancreas didn't form, which leads to diabetes and trouble digesting food. Heart differences are also present, such as holes in the heart walls. GARD lists the onset as any time in life, and many babies are small for their age and have feeding trouble.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Underdeveloped or missing pancreas
  • Diabetes needing insulin in newborns
  • Hole between the heart's upper chambers (atrial septal defect)
  • Hole between the heart's lower chambers (ventricular septal defect)
  • Trouble digesting food (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency)
  • Poor growth and feeding difficulties

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and hormone specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in GATA6 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
