Living with Palmoplantar keratoderma-hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy syndrome

A rare inherited condition with thick skin on the palms and soles plus nerve problems that weaken the legs.

Understanding Palmoplantar keratoderma-hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy syndrome

Palmoplantar keratoderma-hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy syndrome is a rare inherited nerve and skin condition.

Thick skin on the palms and soles starts in childhood. Later, nerve damage causes weakness and muscle wasting, mostly in the lower legs, and reduced feeling in a stocking-and-glove pattern. Weakness can later spread higher in the legs and into the arms. Nerve speed tests are normal or near normal. GARD lists onset from birth to childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD describes these features:

  • Thick skin on palms and soles
  • Weakness and muscle loss in the lower legs
  • Reduced feeling in hands and feet
  • Reduced vibration sense
  • Tingling (paresthesia) or pain
  • High-arched or twisted feet

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
