Living with Neuromyelitis optica
An autoimmune condition that attacks the eye nerves and the spinal cord, causing vision loss, weakness, and numbness.
Understanding Neuromyelitis optica
In an autoimmune condition, the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. In neuromyelitis optica, it causes optic neuritis (inflammation of the nerve from the eye to the brain, with eye pain and vision loss) and transverse myelitis (inflammation of the spinal cord, causing weakness, numbness, and paralysis). There are two forms. The relapsing form is the most common. It has repeated episodes, months or years apart, usually with partial recovery in between.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Eye pain
- Vision loss in one or both eyes
- Inflammation of the spinal cord (myelitis)
- Weakness or paralysis in the legs
- Bladder control problems
- Numbness or changes in sensation
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and eye disease specialists.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
- 4Connect with expert centers
Autoimmune Association, Siegel Rare Neuroimmune Association and Global Autoimmune Institute may keep lists of experts for this condition.
