Living with Neurologic, endocrine, and pancreatic disease, multisystem, infantile-onset 1

A rare genetic condition starting in infancy that affects the brain, hearing, hormones, and the pancreas's digestive function.

Understanding Neurologic, endocrine, and pancreatic disease, multisystem, infantile-onset 1

Neurologic, endocrine, and pancreatic disease, multisystem, infantile-onset 1 is a rare genetic condition that affects several body systems.

People have global developmental delay, a head that grows slowly after birth, intellectual disability, poor coordination, hearing loss, and trouble digesting food because the pancreas makes too few digestive enzymes. Other features can include low muscle tone, slow growth, nerve problems, hormone differences, and facial differences. Brain imaging may show loss of cerebellum tissue.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Delayed development
  • Poor coordination (ataxia)
  • Hearing loss (sensorineural)
  • Trouble digesting food (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency)
  • Diabetes
  • Poor weight gain (failure to thrive)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, digestive system specialists, ear, nose, and throat specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in PTRH2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
