Living with Neurofibromatosis, type 2
A genetic condition with non-cancerous tumors in the nervous system, especially on the nerves of the inner ear, with hearing loss.
Understanding Neurofibromatosis, type 2
The most common tumors are vestibular schwannomas, which grow along the nerve from the inner ear to the brain. Meningiomas, which form on the covering of the brain and spinal cord, are also common. Symptoms usually start in the teens or early twenties. Early signs include hearing loss, ringing in the ears, and balance problems. Cataracts can occur, often starting in childhood.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Hearing loss
- Tumors on the hearing and balance nerves
- Meningiomas
- Spinal cord tumors
- Cataracts
- Reduced clarity of vision
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.
Diagnosis
- 1Talk with your doctor
Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.
- 2See a specialist
Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, cancer specialists, ear, nose, and throat specialists and eye disease specialists.
- 3Consider genetic testing
Changes in NF2 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
- 4Connect with expert centers
Acoustic Neuroma Association, Children's Tumor Foundation and Neurofibromatosis Midwest may keep lists of experts for this condition.

Quick facts
GARD lists changes in the NF2 gene. The condition is autosomal dominant, which means one changed copy of the gene can be enough to cause it.
