Living with Nephropathy - deafness - hyperparathyroidism syndrome

A rare inherited condition with kidney failure, overactive parathyroid glands, and hearing loss, starting in childhood.

Understanding Nephropathy - deafness - hyperparathyroidism syndrome

Nephropathy - deafness - hyperparathyroidism syndrome is a rare inherited condition that affects the kidneys, parathyroid glands, and hearing.

People have kidney failure without blood in the urine, overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism), and hearing loss from inner ear problems. GARD lists onset in childhood. There have been no further descriptions in the medical literature since 1989.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Reduced kidney function
  • Kidney filter disease (glomerulopathy)
  • High parathyroid hormone (hyperparathyroidism)
  • Hearing loss (sensorineural)
  • Bone cysts

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include ear, nose, and throat specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
