Living with Neonatal severe primary hyperparathyroidism

A rare inherited condition with very high blood calcium from birth, caused by overactive parathyroid glands, affecting bones and muscle tone.

Understanding Neonatal severe primary hyperparathyroidism

Neonatal severe primary hyperparathyroidism (NSHPT) is a rare inherited condition with very high blood calcium (hypercalcemia) from birth.

It is linked to major hyperparathyroidism, which means overactive parathyroid glands. Features can include weak bones with repeated fractures, low muscle tone, a narrow chest, and an enlarged liver and spleen. Signs start in the newborn period.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Very high blood calcium from birth
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Repeated bone fractures
  • Narrow chest
  • Short stature
  • Enlarged liver and spleen

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include bone and joint specialists, genetic specialists and hormone specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in CASR are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
