Living with Myosin storage myopathy

An inherited muscle condition with weakness that stays about the same or worsens very slowly, usually noticed in childhood.

Understanding Myosin storage myopathy

Myosin storage myopathy is an inherited condition that causes muscle weakness that doesn't get worse or gets worse very slowly.

Clumps of a protein called myosin form in certain muscle fibers. Signs usually show up in childhood, though they can start later. People may start walking later, have a waddling walk, have trouble climbing stairs, and have trouble lifting their arms above the shoulders. Some people also have trouble breathing from muscle weakness.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Weak shoulder muscles
  • Winged shoulder blades
  • Larger-looking calf muscles
  • Trouble climbing stairs
  • Waddling walk

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in MYH7 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
