Living with Myopathy, myofibrillar, 13, with rimmed vacuoles

A rare inherited nerve and muscle condition with slowly worsening weakness that begins in the legs.

Understanding Myopathy, myofibrillar, 13, with rimmed vacuoles

Myopathy, myofibrillar, 13, with rimmed vacuoles is a rare inherited nerve and muscle condition that begins in the lower legs.

It combines a nerve problem affecting the legs with a muscle condition. It typically starts in the second or third decade of life. Weakness and muscle shrinking slowly get worse, first in the lower legs, and later in the upper limbs and the trunk. The breathing and heart muscles are not involved.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Weakness in the lower legs
  • Foot drop
  • Trouble climbing stairs
  • Changes in walking
  • Reduced or absent reflexes
  • Trouble with exercise

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in HSPB8 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy may keep lists of experts for this condition.
