Living with Mosaic trisomy 16

A rare chromosome condition with a very wide range of features, from minor differences with normal development to slow growth and organ differences.

Understanding Mosaic trisomy 16

Mosaic trisomy 16 is a rare chromosome condition in which some cells have an extra copy of chromosome 16.

Features range widely. Some people have minor differences and normal development. Others have slow growth before birth, changes in skin color, uneven face or body, heart and genital differences, scoliosis, and hearing loss. Bone differences, mild facial differences, and developmental delay have also been seen. Signs are seen during pregnancy or in the newborn period.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Heart differences
  • Slow growth before birth
  • Small size for gestational age
  • Early (premature) birth

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

Quick facts

Symptoms usually startduring Pregnancy and as a Newborn

This condition is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 16 in some, but not all, of the body's cells. GARD says changes in genes (also called variants) cause it.
