Living with Microlissencephaly-micromelia syndrome

A rare genetic syndrome affecting brain development, with a small head, short upper arms, seizures, and extra amniotic fluid before birth.

Understanding Microlissencephaly-micromelia syndrome

Microlissencephaly-micromelia syndrome is a rare genetic syndrome of abnormal brain development with a small head and short upper limbs.

Features include a lot of extra amniotic fluid during pregnancy (polyhydramnios), a head that is small after birth, a smooth brain surface (lissencephaly), and short upper limbs (micromelia). Other features include coarse facial features, extra body hair, and seizures that are hard to treat. Low parathyroid hormone has also been reported. Signs are seen in the newborn period or infancy.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Smooth brain surface (lissencephaly)
  • Small head after birth (secondary microcephaly)
  • Seizures
  • Delays in reaching developmental milestones
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Low parathyroid hormone (hypoparathyroidism)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists and seizure and epilepsy specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Epilepsy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
