Living with Microcephaly, normal intelligence and immunodeficiency

A genetic condition (Nijmegen breakage syndrome) with a small head, short stature, repeated infections, and a higher chance of cancer.

Understanding Microcephaly, normal intelligence and immunodeficiency

Microcephaly, normal intelligence and immunodeficiency is a genetic condition, also called Nijmegen breakage syndrome, that affects growth, the head, and the immune system.

People have short stature, a small head that is clear from birth in most, and certain facial features. The immune system does not work as it should, which can lead to repeated infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis. There is an increased risk of cancer, most often non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and about half of people develop it, usually before age 15. Some people also have intellectual disability.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Smaller-than-average head size (microcephaly)
  • Large ears and a beaked nose
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
  • Autoimmune hemolytic anemia
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Attention deficit disorder

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include allergy and immune system specialists, brain and nervous system specialists, cancer specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in NBN are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Immune Deficiency Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
