Living with Microcephaly 5, primary, autosomal recessive

An inherited condition that affects the brain, causing a small head size at birth, learning challenges, and delayed speech.

Understanding Microcephaly 5, primary, autosomal recessive

Microcephaly 5, primary, autosomal recessive (MCPH5) is an inherited neurological condition that causes a significantly smaller head size at birth.

MCPH5 is part of a group of conditions called primary microcephaly. It is linked to intellectual disability and delayed speech. In some people it also causes short stature or mild seizures. The folds and ridges on the surface of the brain are less complex than average (simplified gyral pattern).

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Smaller-than-average head size (microcephaly)
  • Intellectual disability
  • Delayed speech and language development
  • Delayed motor skills
  • Short stature
  • More active than typical (hyperactivity)

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
