Living with Menkes kinky-hair syndrome

An inherited condition that affects copper levels, with sparse kinky hair, slow growth, and nervous system changes.

Understanding Menkes kinky-hair syndrome

Menkes kinky-hair syndrome is an inherited disorder that affects copper levels in the body.

It causes sparse, kinky hair, slow weight gain and growth, and nervous system decline. Other signs include weak muscle tone, sagging facial features, seizures, delayed development, and intellectual disability. Signs usually begin in infancy. GARD says early treatment with copper may help some people. Occipital horn syndrome is a milder form that begins in childhood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Sparse, kinky hair
  • Poor weight gain and growth
  • Low muscle tone
  • Seizures
  • Developmental delay
  • Loose joints and loose skin

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists, genetic specialists, seizure and epilepsy specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in ATP7A are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.

  4. Connect with expert centers

Epilepsy Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
