A rare genetic condition present before birth with brain, kidney, liver, and finger or toe differences.
Understanding Meckel syndrome, type 2
It is characterized by a bulge of brain tissue at the back of the skull (occipital meningoencephalocele), enlarged kidneys with many cysts, liver changes, and extra fingers or toes on the pinky side. GARD refers to MKS1 for a fuller description.
Signs & symptoms
Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:
- Brain tissue bulging through the back of the skull (encephalocele)
- Kidney cysts
- Extra fingers or toes (polydactyly)
- Changes in the liver's bile ducts
- Cleft palate
- Bowed long bones
Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.
- 3Ask which tests can help
Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
Care & treatment
