Living with Madras motor neuron disease

A rare nerve condition causing weakness and muscle wasting in the limbs, along with hearing loss and speech and swallowing changes.

Understanding Madras motor neuron disease

Madras motor neuron disease is a rare nerve condition that causes limb weakness and wasting, nerve problems in the head and neck, and hearing loss.

It involves weakness and shrinking of muscles in the limbs, weakness of several nerves that control the face, tongue, and throat, and hearing loss from the inner ear. It can begin anywhere from childhood to adulthood.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Weakness in the hands and feet (distal weakness)
  • Muscle wasting in the hands and feet
  • Muscle twitching in the limbs (fasciculations)
  • Weak voice
  • Hearing loss from the inner ear
  • Brisk reflexes

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include brain and nervous system specialists and genetic specialists.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.
