Living with Lymphatic malformation 6

A rare inherited condition with widespread lymphedema (swelling from lymph fluid) and sometimes fluid around organs.

Understanding Lymphatic malformation 6

Lymphatic malformation 6 is a rare genetic primary lymphedema with uniform, widespread swelling from lymph fluid.

It often involves other body systems, such as lymph vessel problems in the intestines and lungs and fluid around the lungs and heart. Fluid buildup in a baby before birth (non-immune hydrops fetalis) is common and may fully resolve after birth. Some people have severe, recurring facial skin infections. Intelligence is normal, and seizures are absent.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD lists these among the most common:

  • Widespread lymphedema
  • Skin infection (cellulitis)
  • Eye folds (epicanthus)
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Fluid around the lungs or heart
  • Small lower jaw

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Specialists who may be involved include genetic specialists and skin, hair, and nail specialists.

  3. Consider genetic testing

Changes in PIEZO1 are linked to this condition. Genetic testing and counseling can help confirm a diagnosis and explain what it means for your family.
