Living with Long QT syndrome 10

A heart rhythm condition with a long QT interval that can cause fainting, usually during exercise or strong emotion.

Understanding Long QT syndrome 10

Long QT syndrome 10 is a heart electrical condition with a long QT interval on an ECG that can lead to dangerous fast heart rhythms.

The usual rhythm problem is torsade de pointes, which often stops on its own and causes fainting. Events typically happen during exercise or emotional stress, less often during sleep, and usually without warning. About half of untreated people with a disease-causing gene change have symptoms. Events can start from infancy through middle age, most often from the preteen years through the 20s.

Signs & symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. GARD says fainting is the most common symptom, and also lists:

  • Fainting (syncope)
  • Fast, abnormal heartbeats (tachyarrhythmias)
  • Quivering upper heart chambers (irregular heartbeat)
  • Interrupted electrical signals between heart chambers

Not everyone has every symptom. GARD's list comes from the Human Phenotype Ontology.

Diagnosis

  1. Talk with your doctor

Share the symptoms you've noticed, when they started and your family health history. Notes and photos can help.

  2. See a specialist

Your doctor may refer you to a specialist who knows rare conditions.

  3. Ask which tests can help

Your care team will decide which exams and tests can confirm the diagnosis.

  4. Connect with expert centers

SADS Foundation may keep lists of experts for this condition.
